Denison had three senior student-athletes received North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances last week. Carly Schultz (women’s golf), Aaron Klimchuk (men’s golf) and Rebecca Dyer (softball) were all honored by the conference office in their respective sports.
Schultz was named women’s Golfer of the Week after taking home medalist honors at the 2014 Myrtle Beach Shootout from the Norman Course at the Barefoot Golf Resort in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The senior fired a career-low round of 77 at the 5,817-yard, par 72 course. Schultz’ previous career-low was an 82 which came last September at the Ohio Wesleyan Fall Invitational. As a team, the Big Red captured the team title with a score of 347, besting second-place McDaniel by 33 strokes.
Klimchuk was named Golfer of the Week on the men’s side after helping Denison finish third at the Myrtle Beach Shootout on the Dye Club Course at the Barefoot Golf Resort. The senior finished in a tie for second in the individual standings after carding a three-over par, 75. DU was third in the team standings with 318 strokes, while McDaniel and Rutgers-Camden tied for the top spot with 315 strokes each.
Dyer was tabbed NCAC Pitcher of the Week after a strong showing last week. The senior hurler became the program’s all-time leader in career shutouts with 17 after tossing a three-hit shutout against La Verne (8-0) on Tuesday. On the week, Dyer posted a minuscule 0.47 ERA after allowing just one run in four appearances inside the circle. She went 2-0 in two starts and earned her fifth-career save in a relief appearance against Gustavus Adolphus. Dyer tied the school record for career saves after allowing one hit and striking out two batters in the seventh inning against the Gusties. Over the course of the week, Dyer struck out 18 batters and held opposing hitters to a .211 average. She also went 15 innings without issuing a walk.
The Big Red softball team is scheduled to resume play on Wednesday when they travel to John Carroll for a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. The Denison women’s golf team will return to the links this weekend at the Capital University Swing for the Cure tournament at Westchester C.C. in Canal Winchester, Ohio. The DU men’s golf team is back in action on April 5-6 at the Ohio Wesleyan Strimer Memorial at Oakhaven G.C.
