Individuals ready for NCAA Championship

The team portion of the 2011 NCAA Division III Tennis Championships wrapped up on Thursday, opening the door for the individual singles and doubles championship tournaments at Pomona-Pitzer College in Pomona, Calif.

Denison will have four athletes taking part in the single elimination tournaments which kick off on Friday (May 27) at 12 p.m. EST

In that first set of matches at 12 p.m. EST, senior Kristin Cobb will Arianne Goddhard of Austin College.  Cobb brings a 19-7 singles record into tournament while Goddhard carries a record of 12-3.  The winner of the Cobb-Goddhard match will advance to the second round on Friday at 1 p.m. against the winner of Jordan Brewster of Amherst College and Ariel Taylor of Sweet Briar.  Brewer is seeded fourth in the field of 32 competitors.

Friday could be a very busy day for Cobb as she has the potential to play three matches between the singles and doubles tournament.  At 7 p.m. EST, Cobb and her teammate, Sarah Short, will square off against Cabrielle Clark and Lorne McManigle of Emory University.  Denison and Emory played on March 15 but McManigle and Clark were not paired together in the doubles portion of that match.

The final match of the day will feature Denison's Tyler Cempre and Matt McErlean at 8 p.m. EST when they face Jeff Casserd and Cameron Spearman of Redlands in the first round.  Cempre and McErlean qualified for the doubles championship after posting a record of 17-5.  The duo was 15-4 in dual matches and recorded a record of 3-1 against regionally ranked opponents.  Friday's opponents, Casserd and Spearman, are 11-5 in 2011.  The winner will advance to Saturday's quarterfinal at 6 p.m. EST.
