Mike Clark returns for his third season as the head baseball coach at Denison University in 2012.
In his second season leading the Big Red in 2011 he guided the Big Red to 16 victories and missed qualifying for the postseason conference tournament by just one game in the final standings. Senior Matt Forgatch was named to the All-NCAC first-team after batting .444 with a school-record six triples and 25 stolen bases. The Big Red were also one of just three teams that season to defeat top-ranked Marietta College.
In 2010, DU finished with a 23-18 record and placed second in the North Coast Athletic Conference after advancing to the championship game of the 2010 NCAC Baseball Championship Tournament in Chillicothe, Ohio. Denison captured the top seed out of the NCAC's West Division after posting an 11-5 record in league play. The result was the program's fifth division crown since 2003.
His 2010 squad posted a .321 batting average and a .407 on-base
percentage. Senior pitcher/designated hitter Aidan Lucas
became the first player since John Kenney in 1982 to be selected in
the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Lucas was drafted by
the St. Louis Cardinals in the 27th round with the 829th pick,
overall. He also led the team in hitting with a .430 batting
average and 34 RBIs.
Clark came to Denison after spending six seasons as an assistant
coach at Emory University, where he served under Mike Twardoski,
one of the winningest active coaches in NCAA Division III. During
his time with the Eagles they posted a record of 162-54-1 (.749)
while making three NCAA regional appearances to go along with four
University Athletic Association championships. In 2007, Emory
finished as the national runner-up at the Division III College
World Series and set a new school record for victories with 43.
Clark's duties at Emory included working with pitchers, catchers,
hitters, outfielders and coaching at first base. Since 2007, he has
coordinated all recruiting efforts for the Eagles, as well as
serving as the equipment coordinator for Emory's 16-sport athletic
department.
A 2002 graduate of Cortland State, Clark was a catcher on the 1997
NCAA qualifying team. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in
elementary education at Cortland, Clark spent five years as a
teacher and baseball coach at the high school, college, and
summer-league levels in the greater Atlanta area.
In 2002, Clark was the head coach of the Finger Lakes White Sox, a
collegiate summer league team based in central New York. That would
lead to an assistant coaching position with the Brewster Whitecaps
of the prestigious Cape Cod League in 2006. Clark helped coach the
Whitecaps in the Cape Cod League playoffs and coached 10 future
professional players, as well as five CCL All-Stars. Clark,
his wife Rachel, son Jack and daughter Leah live in Granville.
