Denison drops series to OWU

Ohio Wesleyan swept Monday's doubleheader in Granville to take three of four games from DU.  The Bishops won the opener 12-10, and posted a 7-5 victory in the nightcap.

The two teams combined for 22 runs and 31 hits in game one.  OWU plated seven runs in the second inning en route to taking an 8-0 lead.  Denison answered with a three-run, five-hit third to shrink the margin to five.

The Battling Bishops extended its lead to 10-3 after scoring twice in the sixth, but four tallies in the bottom of the frame made it a three-run game.  Sophomore Jeremy Tirado drove in Kyle Colgain and Drew Rice on a double to left, while a double to right center by Ryan Mulligan plated Andrew Mahle and Tirado.

Trailing 12-7 in the bottom of the seventh, Danny Kraus dropped a single into right center that scored Evan Nicholson.  After an Ohio Wesleyan pitching change, Rice scored pinch runner Tyler Nicholson on a base hit through the left side.  Tirado followed with an RBI ground out to the pitcher to make it a two-run game, but back-to-back strikeouts secured OWU win.

Colgain went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Tirado was 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs.  Mulligan also posted two hits and two RBIs, while Mahle scored twice and drove in another.  Junior Tim Duxbury suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits in two innings.

Trailing 4-0 in the second contest, DU erupted for four runs in the fourth.  A pair of hit batters and a walk loaded the bases with one out.  Senior Justin Vaske cut the deficit in half with a base hit through the right side that scored Evan Nicholson and Kyle Clemmenson.  With two down, Rice knocked in Vaske and Colgain with a double to left center.  The Big Red took their first lead of the game an inning later when Kraus scored on an RBI ground ball by Clemmenson.

However, Ohio Wesleyan scored twice in the seventh and tacked on an insurance run in the ninth en route to the twinbill sweep.

Kraus, Mahle and Vaske all logged two hits in the nightcap.  Vaske and Rice each drove in a pair, while Kraus, Mahle and Rice each posted an extra-base hit.  McCavitt Carter took the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings.

Denison falls to 10-22-1 overall and 4-8 in NCAC West Division play, while OWU moves to 18-13 and 6-6 in league play.  DU returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Ohio Northern.  First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
