Denison University senior Nick Weiss has been selected to play in the 2011 Ohio Army National Guard Senior Bowl II on Saturday (April 23) at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The Bowl game, which is sponsored by OhioCollegeFootball.com, Ohio Army National Guard and GameDay Management, Inc., will feature top senior athletes in Ohio from all levels, spanning NCAA I-A, II, III and the NAIA.
Weiss will represent Denison on the South Team. Joining Weiss on the South squad will be players from schools such as Ohio State, Cincinnati, Ohio University, Miami, Dayton, Otterbein, Capital and Wittenberg. The North Team will consist of players from schools such as Toledo, Akron, Kent State, Youngstown State, Ashland, Mount Union, Case Western Reserve and Ohio Northern.
A four-year starter, Weiss was slowed down by the injury bug during his final two seasons in Granville. In his first two seasons, the Cincinnati native started 19 of 20 games in the Big Red secondary. He averaged 10.6 return yards per punt and returned to kicks for touchdowns. The senior also 89 tackles, 17 pass deflections and seven interceptions in his first two years. In 2009, Weiss registered 14 tackles and three breakups in two games. He also averaged 72 return yards per game. In his final season, the Anderson grad recorded 10 stops in three games, including a nine-tackle performance in the season opener against rival Ohio Wesleyan. He also returned five punts for 59 yards before being sidelined with an injury.
Weiss is the third DU football player to compete in the Senior Bowl, after Drew Homyk and Nick Krempasky were picked to participate in the inaugural event last year. Weiss is one of 39 players on the South Roster. The game, which will run taped delayed on Sports Time Ohio (STO), is scheduled for a 5 p.m. kickoff on April 23. Presale tickets can be purchased online at ticketmaster.com or at the Crew Stadium ticket office.
