Men to host Wittenberg in NCAC Tournament

Denison will host Wittenberg in the NCAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Denison will host Wittenberg in the NCAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Livingston Gymnasium will be the site of a North Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament game for the first time since 2005 on Tuesday when Denison hosts Wittenberg at 8 p.m.

The Big Red is the No. 4 seed in this year's tournament after posting a 9-9 record in conference play.  Denison won a tiebreaker with fifth-seeded Wittenberg for the right to host the quarterfinal game.

Denison and Wittenberg both enter Tuesday's game with identical 14-11 records and the two teams split the regular-season series with each team winning on each other's home court.

The Big Red is led in scoring by junior Jett Speelman who ranks fourth in the NCAC at 17.9 ppg.  Speelman also leads the conference in free throw percentage (89.1) while shooting 39 percent from beyond the arc.

David Meurer is averaging 13.7 ppg while Darius White checks in at 10.5 ppg.  Meurer needs only 19 points to become the 21st player to score 1,000 career points at Denison.  White is a career 39 percent 3-point shooter who is shooting a career-high 46 percent this season.  White is leading the onference in 3-point percentage and is 15th in Division III.

Wittenberg also has three players averaging double figures.  Jaelin Williams leads the way at 14.7 ppg to go along with 5.9 rpg.  Cody Phillippi is scoring 11.0 ppg while leading the team in 3-pointers made (40).  Sophomore 6-9 post, Chad Roy is scoring 10.2 ppg.

This is the seventh time Denison and Wittenberg will meet on the hardwood in the 14-year tenure of Big Red head coach Bob Ghiloni.  Denison's last win over the Tigers came in 2012 when DU upset the top-seeded Tigers in the tournament semifinals in Springfield.

Tickets for Tuesday's game will be available at the door.  Prices are $7 for adults and $5 for children (18-and under).  College students from an NCAC institution with a valid ID will be admitted free of charge.  Additionally, the first 50 Denison faculty/staff members with a valid ID will also receive complimentary admission.  For those who cannot attend, a live video broadcast of the game will be provided by the Denison Sports Network.
