Inside Lacrosse has released their 2011 Face-Off Yearbook and the Big Red are ranked 14th in the preseason Division III men's lacrosse national rankings. Also included as honorable mention preseason All-Americans were junior defenseman Nick Farrell (New York, N.Y./Millbrook School), senior middie Tanner Smith (Boxford, Mass./Brooks School) and senior attack Emmett Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy).
The Big Red are coming off a 2010 season which saw them go 10-4 and advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the sixth consecutive season and their 18th time, overall. They finished the year ranked 15th in the Division III United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Coaches Poll and Smith and Brady Burton were named to the USILA All-America team.
This is Jones' second preseason All-America citation. He was also recognized prior to his junior season. He is coming off a 2010 season which saw him score 34 goals and become the 12th player in DU history to net 100 career goals. His six-goal showing against rival, Ohio Wesleyan earned him North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week accolades.
Smith is coming off an All-American season in 2010 which saw him score 22 goals and add 18 assists. He was a first-team All-NCAC selection while appearing in all 14 games. Additionally, Smith was the team's lone junior co-captain in 2010.
Farrell is making his first preseason All-American appearance after earning second-team All-NCAC last season on defense. Farrell and the Big Red held opponents to 7.48 goals per game which ranked 28th, nationally.
Denison will open their 2011 season on Feb. 19 when they travel to Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio.
