Two more Scholar All-Americans for DU lacrosse
Denison seniors Tanner Smith and Emmett Jones were named to the 2011 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Scholar All-America squad. In a list which spans all of NCAA Division I, II and III, for the second-straight year the Big Red were the only North Coast Athletic Conference school with more than one Scholar All-American.
An even more impressive fact remains, that since 2010 Denison's five Scholar All-Americans is tied with Tufts University for the most in the nation, in any division. In 2010 Denison's seniors Brady Burton, Connor Detjen and John Payne were honored. This year, Smith, who was also a USILA All-American, and Jones led the way for DU.
Smith was a first-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference selection in 2011 and is a two-time USILA All-American. He led the team in points with 44 and paced the team with 57 ground balls. Smith was awarded the inaugural NCAC Sportsmanship Award and leaves Denison ranked 20th in points (150), tied for 12th in assists (81) and tied for 28th in goals (69).
Jones was a second-team All-NCAC pick this season after leading the team in goals with 29. He is a four-time all-conference selection and midway through the season he moved into third place on Denison's all-time goal scoring list, behind only former all-time leading scorer, Andy John and his former teammate, Burton. Jones leaves Denison with 131 career goals scored and is 13th on the DU career points list (131 goals; 34 assists).
In 1989 the USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee selects an overall team representing Division I, II and III. The Scholar All-Americas are recognized at the annual Lacrosse All-America Banquet.
