McErlean and Cempre fall at NCAAs
The Denison doubles team of Matt McErlean and Tyler Cempre suffered a heart-breaking loss in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA Doubles Championship on Friday in Claremont, Calif.
The Big Red tandem opened up their first-ever NCAA appearance in impressive fashion. McErlean and Cempre opened their first-round match with a 6-2 victory over Jeff Casserd and Cameron Spearman of the University of Redlands. In the second set, the team from Redlands responded with a 6-2 win of their own to square the match at 1-1.
The Denison duo took a 3-2 edge in the early stages of the third-and-final set. In a tightly contested affair, the team of Spearman and Casserd edged McErlean and Cempre 7-6 to advance to the second round of competition.
The DU pairing saw their six-match win streak snapped in the round of 16. They closed out the 2011 season with a 17-6 record, including a 15-3 mark at the first doubles flight.
