Salukombo advances to finals at NCAA Championships
For the second-straight season, Denison junior Dee Salukombo advanced to the finals of the men's mile after finishing eighth overall in Friday's trials at the 2011 NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship from Capital University in Bexley, Ohio.
Salukomobo automatically qualified for Saturday's championship final with a second-place finish in his heat of the mile. The junior logged a time of 4:17.03, while defending national champion Nick Guarino of SUNY-Fredonia won the heat with a time of 4:16.22. The Lakewood native qualified for nationals after finishing second in the mile at last weekend's North Coast Athletic Conference championship. He completed the race in 4:12.93, which was just seven-tenths of a second off his school-record time set back in 2010.
Kirkwood Donavin of Cornell College posted the top time in today's trials and will start in lane two. Salukombo will start in lane eight on Saturday. The championship in the men's mile will take place at 4:55 p.m. and will be available thanks to the NCAA's live video feed which can be found here.
