Gators sweep NCAC opener from DU

Denison dropped a pair of close decisions at Allegheny on Saturday afternoon.  The Gators won the opener 2-0, and walked off with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

In game one, Allegheny ended Kelsey Hager's shutout bid in the fifth when Marina Scarantino hit a two-run home run with two outs.  Hager scattered just three hits and struck out two in six innings of work.  Junior Jess Robertson logged two of DU's five hits, while Kait Fiore, Emily Lipsitz and Heather Larsen logged the other Big Red base knocks.

In the nightcap, it was Denison that jumped out to a one-run lead in the fourth frame.  After reaching on a fielder's choice out, sophomore Rachel Laughlin scored from second on a double to right center by Meghan Edwards.  In the sixth, Allegheny took the lead on an RBI triple by Nicole Rodi and a single by Stephanie Fort.

In the top of the seventh, Denison tied the game thanks to a hit and a pair of Gator errors.  However, a two-out single by Shannen Segiel in the bottom of the frame scored Leah Herlocker and secured the twinbill sweep.

Laughlin took the loss after giving up three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.  Edwards went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Laughlin and Rosie Glaser scored the two DU runs.

Denison falls to 10-10 overall and 0-2 in the NCAC, while Allegheny improves to 15-4-1 and 2-0 in league play.  DU returns to action on Tuesday at Oberlin for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
