7th inning magic leads to sweep

Erin Laswell fired a complete game 4-hitter in game one vs. MSJ.
Erin Laswell fired a complete game 4-hitter in game one vs. MSJ.

Denison pried victory from the jaws of defeat with a 3-run 7th inning in game two of their doubleheader with Mount St. Joseph completing a 4-0, and 3-2 sweep of the Lions on Monday night in Granville.

After Erin Laswell pitched Denison to a 4-hit shutout victory in game one, the Big Red found themselves down to their final three outs in the nightcap.  Pinch hitter Meghan Edwards started the inning off right with a base hit to center.  Laswell was asked to pinch hit for Rachel Laughlin and the freshman appeared to have drawn a walk before it was discovered that she had not been announced to the umpire as a pinch hitter prior to the at-bat.  Laswell was called out and Edwards was forced to retreat to first base.

Junior leftfielder Emily Lipsitz would come through with her second hit of the game that moved Edwards back into scoring position.  Anna Balch would follow with a pinch hit single up the middle loading the bases for Julie RooneyHeather Larsen would pinch run for Balch at second, then Rooney would answer with a hit to the gap in left-center scoring Edwards.  MSJ centerfielder Mallory Wright fielded the ball and threw to third base.  Lipsitz was unable to score on the play and was held up at third but Balch was rounding second and the two very nearly found themselves on third base at the same time, which would have resulted in an out.  Instead, a rundown ensued and the throw from third base to the shortstop, in an attempt to tag out Balch, was dropped, allowing Lipsitz to score and Balch to retreat to second base.

With one out and runners on first and third, rookie catcher Lindsey Kenyon came ended the game with an RBI single through the left side of the infield, sending the Big Red faithful home happy.

Five of Denison's nine hits came in the bottom of seventh as senior pitcher Kelsey Hager picked up her third win of the season.  She scattered six hits and struck out four while allowing one earned run.

Mount St. Joseph's Jessica Davis suffered the hard-luck loss.  She went the distance allowing two earned runs while striking out two.

Rooney and Lipsitz each had two hits for Denison with Kenyon providing the game-winning RBI.

In the opening game, Laswell recorded her first career shutout and fourth complete game of the season.  She allowed four hits and struck out five in the win.

Rooney was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Kenyon was a perfect 3-for-3 while driving in a pair from the ninth spot in the batting order. Gretchen Staubach and Kerry Hager also posted multi-hit games for DU in game one.

The pair of victories improved Denison's record to 16-12 on the season.  It also marked Denison's first doubleheader sweep since April 9 against Oberlin.

The Big Red will now gear up for the biggest week of their season.  With a berth to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on the line, DU will hit the road for conference doubleheaders with Wooster on Wednesday and Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday only to return home for a regular-season finale with Kenyon on Sunday.  Denison is currently 6-4 in league play and is in third place in the conference standings.
