The Big Red women's lacrosse team opened up the home portion of their schedule with a dominating 19-2 victory over Kalamazoo College on Sunday afternoon at Piper Stadium.
Denison jumped all over the previously unbeaten Hornets with 11-consecutive goals to open the first half. DU outscored Kalamazoo 14-1 in the opening 30 minutes of play. The Big Red had 10 different players score in the first period, highlighted by a first-half hat-trick by sophomore Carol Allen. Allen scored her first two goals just two minutes and 25 seconds apart, while her third goal of the period came with just 1:11 to play.
The Big Red scored on five of their seven shots in the second period. In addition to Allen, Claire Ludlow and Reid Hirschey also recorded three goals on the day, while junior Molly Chapman added a goal and five assists.
Defensively, junior captain Whitney Powel scooped up five ground balls and had three draw controls, while Isabel Swicklik recorded three caused turnovers. Erin Keller led DU with five draw controls, while Chapman posted four. Laura Van Horn and Ansley Gibson split time in goal. Van Horn got the win after making one save, while Gibson stopped two second-half shots.
Nicole Huff scored both of Kalamazoo's goals on three shots. Holly Cooperrider grabbed six ground balls and forced three turnovers, while Anika Sproul had four draw controls. Gina Scala suffered the loss after surrendering 14 goals in the first half.
The Big Red outshot Kalamazoo 28-11 and held advantages in both ground balls (28-11) and draw controls (18-5). Denison successfully cleared 12 of 13 attempts, and converted both free-position shot attempts.
Denison improves to 4-1, while the Hornets fall to 2-1. DU returns to action on Saturday when they open North Coast Athletic Conference play against Allegheny. Game time in Granville is scheduled for 1 p.m.
