Comeback attempt foiled at Witt

Hollis Hunsberger had 2 ground balls against Wittenberg.
Hollis Hunsberger had 2 ground balls against Wittenberg.

Megan Loofourrow's goal with 3:27 to play was the difference as Wittenberg held off Denison, 15-14, in women's lacrosse action from Springfield, Ohio.  The victory assures at least a share of the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season title to the Tigers as they improve to 7-0 in conference play.  With the loss, Denison drops to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in league play.

The two teams entered the second half tied, 7-7 and midway through the second half the Tigers went on a 3-0 run, powered by goals from Carrie Kubasta, Olivia Lash, and Alie Marousek that gave Wittenberg a 13-10 lead with just under 19 minutes to play.

The two teams would each put a goal on the board in the next five minutes of play, but with 13:03, Erin Keller's 8-meter attempt found the back of the net and that sparked a 3-0 run for the Big Red.  Over the next three minutes Whitney Powel would add a free-position goal, and Reid Hirschey tallied her third goal of the contest, knotting the score at 14-14 with 9:14 to play.

Over the next six minutes, Denison failed to get a shot on goal, and after an 8-meter attempt was awarded to the Tigers with 3:28 to play, Loofbourrow followed with her eventual game-winner.

Denison's Molly Chapman would control the ensuing draw, and with two minutes left on the clock, Carol Allen put a shot on goal that was saved by Wittenberg's Katie Reuter.  Chapman was there to secure possession and 10 seconds later, a shot by Claire Ludlow would sail wide of the goal, marking DU's final shot attempt of the contest.

HIrschey led Denison with three goals off three shot attempts.  Chapman scored twice and finished with 11 draw controls and five ground balls.  Keller chipped in one goal and led the way with six ground balls.  Powel led all DU players with three caused turnovers. She also scored two goals and had four ground balls.

Wittenberg was paced by Logan Warye, Lash and Marousek who all notched hat tricks.  The Tigers held a 42-29 advantage in the shot department as Laura Van Horn posted a season-high 14 saves for DU. Her counterpart, Reuter, finished with 11 saves.

Denison will return to action on Wednesday (April 23) when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for a 4:30 p.m. draw with Kenyon College.
