DU beats the clock at Wittenberg

Tory Danis' goal with 29 seconds left in the second overtime sent DU to the 1-0 victory.
Tory Danis' goal with 29 seconds left in the second overtime sent DU to the 1-0 victory.

Denison must have really enjoyed the weather.  That's all that could explain the Big Red's remarkable 1-0 double overtime victory over Wittenberg on Thursday night.

Playing through a steady rain and temperatures that dipped into the low 40s, the Big Red and Tigers chewed up 6,571 of the possible 6,600 seconds allotted by the NCAA to decide a soccer match.  With just 29 seconds remaining in the second extra period, senior co-captain Tory Danis redirected a shot attempt by Sara Livingston into the goal, sending DU to its sixth victory and sixth shutout win of the season.

Up to that point, Denison had outshot the host Tigers 19-10 with Livingston leading the way with five shot attempts.  Wittenberg goalkeeper Cassie Lythjohan was forced to make six saves on the night while Andrea Karl notched three saves for DU.

Following Livingston in shot attempts was Lydia Harlan and Danis with four each.

Denison's record improves to 6-7-2 overall while Wittenberg drops to 8-6-1.  The Big Red will look to start a winning streak on Saturday (Oct. 22) when they travel to Oberlin for a 1 p.m. start.
