GRANVILLE, Ohio-- A pair of second half goals were enough to send Denison women's soccer past Ohio Wesleyan, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Piper Stadium. With the win, the Big Red clinch a spot in next week's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
In the first half, it was the Battling Bishops who were threatening to strike first. In the 33rd minute of play, Megan Price sent a shot off the left post. Six minutes later, OWU's Kortney McGinnis sent a shot that just sailed wide right of the goal.
In the second half, Denison came out on the offensive as Allison Vilsack and Kate Dannemiller put shots on goal in the opening five minutes of play. After a foul on the Battling Bishops in the 53rd minute, DU was awarded a free kick and Dannemiller connected with a goal off the free kick attempt to put DU on top, 1-0.
In the 65th minute, Denison's Meg Wozniak placed a beautiful header on-frame via a corner kick attempt by Grace Murray. Bishop keeper Mackenzie Brunke was forced to make a diving save to keep it a 1-0 contest.
The Big Red gained some insurance in the 81st minute when Murray fed a crossing pass to Maggie Armstrong who knocked it in on her second touch. The goal was Armstrong's seventh of the season.
Denison doubled up Ohio Wesleyan in shots, 16-8 but the Bishops held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Brunke made six saves in goal for OWU. Herold did not have to make a save in her 90 minutes of action.
With the win, Denison improves to 8-5-4 and 4-2-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. With 14 total points, the Big Red will enter the NCAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will begin tournament play on Wednesday, November 1 when they travel to Springfield, Ohio to take on No. 2 seeded Wittenberg University. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
