After two days at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio the Big Red sit in fourth place with 517 points. They trail third-place Oakland by 136 points. Host, Miami University leads the meet with 1,398.5 points. At SUNY-Fredonia the Big Red sit in third place after three events. They trail first-place Fredonia by 45 points heading into Saturday.
Denison sophomore Alyssa Swanson (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit) had a big night in Oxford, posting a pair of NCAA automatic qualifying times in the 200 freestyle and the 50 freestyle. In the 200 free she improved her preliminary time by 0.4, touching in 1:50.17. Teammate Marit Wangstad (Wayzata, Minn./The Blake School) followed in eighth place with a time of 1:53.95.
In the 50 freestyle Swanson posted a time of 23.58 to place third overall and log her second 'A' cut of the meet. Following in 13th place and 15th place, respectively with 'B' cut times were Morgan Nuess (Kettering, Ohio/Dayton Christian) and Natalie Lugg (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury).
Aside from Swanson's stellar times, Lugg also turned in an 'A' cut time of 1:04.23 in the preliminaries of the 100 breaststroke. She followed that up with a time of 1:04.59 in the finals, which was good for a sixth place finish. Following right behind in 11th place was senior Ksenia Golovkina (Newton, Mass./Newton South) with a time of 1:04.93.
Sophomore Emily Schroeder (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) posted a pair of 'B' cuts in the 400 IM and the 200 butterfly. Her time in the 400 IM was 4:29.90 and she posted a 10th place finish in the 200 fly with a time of 2:05.80.
At the Blue Devil Invitational Denison logged wins in two of the four events on the opening night of competition. In the 400 IM, Lilla Grisham placed first with a time of 4:35.00 and in the final race of the night Laurel Brabson (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro), Sarah DiNardo (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee), Cari Martin (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) and Breanna Gordon (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) also placed first with a time of 7:59.73.
Other top finishes from Fredonia included Maddie Armitage (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Emily Hopcian (Novi, Mich./Northville) and Shannon Cogan (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) who placed in positions 5-7, respectively in the 50 freestyle.
