Big Red log first relay title; hold firm in second-place

The 200 free relay team captured Denison's first national title of 2011.
The 200 free relay team captured Denison's first national title of 2011.

The Big Red logged their first event national championship and remained in second place overall from the 2011 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championship from Knoxville, Tenn.

Through 10 events Denison sits in second-place with 225 points, trailing only Emory University who leads with 320 points.  Third-place belongs to Williams College with 217 points while Kenyon College occupies fourth-place with 198 points.

In the first event of the night the Denison 200 freestyle relay team of Morgan Nuess, Alyssa Swanson, Lianne McCluskey and Ksenia Golovkina pulled away from the field for a winning time of 1:32.33.  It marked Denison's first national title in the 200 free relay since 2001.  For Golovkina, who swam the anchor in 22.64, it marks her fifth relay national championship of her career.  For Swanson, who is just a sophomore, it runs her career national title count to three.

On the heels of Denison's win in the 200 free relay, the Big Red were dealt a tough blow when junior Emily Schroeder was disqualified following a third-place finish in the 400 IM.  The DQ, which has been a re-occurring theme for many teams at this year's meet, cost Denison 16 team points and temporarily moved them into third place in the team standings.

In the 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle DU would rebound with 50 points thanks to six top-15 finishes.  In the 200 free, Swanson paced Denison with a runner-up finish and a time of 1:48.89.  Marit Wangstad took eighth place in the championship final in 1:51.24 while Hilary Callen took third in the consolation final which was good for an 11th place finish overall.  She touched the wall in 1:51.27.

In the 100 fly it was Laurel Brabson who paced Denison with an eighth-place finish and a time of 56.24.  In the consolation heat, Brenna Broadus and Victoria Masney took 14th and 15th, respectively.  The winner of the 100 fly was Williams' Logan Todhunter who broke the national record in morning prelims with a time of 52.84.  She followed that performance with a time of 53.57 in the final.

In the final event of the night Denison's foursome of Lindsay Zeberlein, Golovkina, Brabson and Swanson placed third in the 400 medley relay in 3:43.89.
