GRANVILLE, Ohio – Three members of the Denison swimming and diving programs were named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division III At-Large teams on Tuesday afternoon. Seniors Jason Wesseling and Ben Burdick represented the national champion men's swimming and diving program as first-team selections, while KT Kustritz (women's swimming and diving) earned second-team accolades from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Named a Google Cloud Academic All-America® selection for the third-straight year, Wesseling is coming off a senior season where he collected a pair of top-six finishes in the 200 (5th – 1:48.03) and 100 backstroke (6th – 48.97) at the 2018 Division III National Championship in Indianapolis, Ind. Making his debut as a first-team honoree, Wesseling's 3.95-grade point average also helped him receive the 2018 North Coast Athletic Conference Male Scholar-Athlete and the Dr. Larry Scheiderer awards, with the latter going to the highest-ranking GPA among Denison male senior athletes. The eight-time All-American recently graduated with a triple major in English, political science, and the classics.
Earning his first nod on the Academic All-America® team, Burdick closed out his Denison career with five All-American accomplishments and three All-NCAC performances while qualifying for the national meet in each of his four years in Granville. Recently graduating with a 3.92 GPA and a major in history, the Carmel, Ind. native was also named the 2018 James T. Glerum Jr. '82 Presidential Award winner at Denison's Top-50 Scholar-Athlete Celebration on April 2.
As one of only three Division III sophomore women to be named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® team in Division III, Kustritz capped off her 2017-18 season with seven, top-four finishes at the NCAA Division III Championship, including a pair of national titles in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. In the 100 breast, Kustritz' time of 59.77 broke the Division III national record as she became the first female to post a sub-one-minute mark in NCAA Division III history. A 13-time All-American and 10-time NCAC Champion, Kustritz will enter her junior year with a 3.79-grade point average as a Health, exercise and sport studies major.
This trio helps run Denison's total of Google Cloud Academic All-America® selections to 89, ranking the college among the leaders in NCAA Division III in this prestigious category.
