GRANVILLE, Ohio – Six members of Denison's men's and women's swimming & diving programs were named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District® first-team. The men's team was represented by senior Carson Clear, junior Bebe Wang, and sophomore Drake Horton, while the women's squad landed juniors KT Kustritz, Kate Mesaros, and Natalie Zaravella on the first team. All six athletes will advance to the national ballot for consideration to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® team.
Making her second-straight appearance on the All-District® first-team, Kustritz continued to shine during her junior season with the Big Red, claiming three additional national championships in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 200-medley relay, as well as running her All-American total up to 20 after securing seven, top-three finishes at the 2019 NCAA D-III Championship in Greensboro, N.C. A 16-time NCAC champion during her career, Kustritz was named the North Coast Athletic Conference's Swimmer of the Year after winning seven conference championships in 2019. Named to the NCAC Academic Honor Roll in 2018 and a member of Denison's Top 50 Student-Athlete Celebration in each of the last two years, Kustritz is a Health, Exercise, and Sport Studies major with a 3.70 grade-point average.
Mesaros and Zaravella made their debut on the Academic All-District® team after helping the women's swimming & diving team place third overall at this year's Division III National Championship. Zaravella, a 10-time All-American, added four, top-six finishes at nationals this year in the 200 and 400 IM, as well as in the 1,650 free and the 800 free relay. Also claiming her second NCAC title in the 400 IM this season, Zaravella currently holds a 3.86 GPA while majoring in economics and global commerce.
Mesaros is a four-time All-American for the Big Red, recently earning a pair of top-six finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the 2019 national meet. Mesaros is a three-time national team member, named to the NCAC Academic Honor Roll in 2018, and was recognized at DU's Top 50 Banquet in each of the last two years. A native of Ann Arbor, Mich., Mesaros is a biology major with a 3.78 GPA.
On the men's side, all three recipients made their Google Cloud Academic All-District® debuts after leading Denison to their second-straight NCAA Division III National Championship in 2019. Wang led the charge for DU with a trio of national titles in the 200 IM, and 400 and 800 free relay. A five-time national champion, Wang is also an 11-time All-American after adding a fourth-place finish in this year's 400 IM and a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke. A CSCAA Scholar All-American in 2017, Wang was also recognized at Denison's Top 50 Celebration in 2018 and 2019. A physics and mathematics double major, Wang will enter his senior year with a 3.96 grade-point average.
Clear and Horton round out DU's Academic All-District® honorees in 2019. Ending his collegiate career with a national championship in the 200-medley relay, Clear will leave Granville as a seven-time All-American, four-time NCAC Champion, and two-time member of the NCAC Academic Honor Roll. Clear currently holds the conference record in the 100 backstroke and the 200-medley relay while also being named to DU's Top 50 Student-Athlete Celebration in each of the last two years. Clear recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology while posting a 3.79 GPA.
Selected as one of two sophomores to be named to the Academic All-District® team in District 7, Horton finished his second year in Granville with six more All-America nods, including three national championships in the 200 free, and 400 and 800 free relays. An 11-time All-American in total, Horton also made his debut at Denison's Top 50 Student-Athlete Banquet in 2019. A data analytics major, Horton will enter his junior year with a 3.72 GPA.
The 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Men's & Women's At-Large Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the playing field and in the classroom. Denison is one of the leaders in NCAA Division III with 91 Google Cloud Academic All-America® selections.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot, with Google Cloud Academic All-America® teams announced in June.
