Another top-40 finish in Learfield Directors' Cup places Denison among the elite

GRANVILLE, Ohio--  Denison University placed 39th out of 448 NCAA Division III institutions in the final Learfield Division III Directors' Cup standings, marking the college's 11th top-40 finish since 2004 and its best finish since 2015-16 (25th). 

Denison is also one of just 12 colleges nationally that is recognized in the top 50 of both the US News and World Report National Liberal Arts rankings and the Learfield Directors' Cup Division III standings. 

The Learfield Directors' Cup is given annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).  Points for the Directors' Cup is based on the order of finish in NCAA sponsored championships with the goal of identifying the top overall athletics department in the nation.

Denison totaled 409.5 points in this year's Directors' Cup standings, tying for 39th place.  Seven Big Red athletics teams contributed to the total scoring, led by the men's swimming & diving national championship (100 points) and the women's swimming & diving team's third-place finish (85 points).

The men's lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight and earned 73 points and the women's lacrosse team posted its second-straight trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 to earn 64 points.

Denison baseball set a program record with 39 victories and won the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time. They made their second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and totaled 37.5 points.

In the fall, Denison football made its second NCAA playoff appearance and first appearance since 1985 after capturing a share of the NCAC Championship.  Field Hockey finished the year with an 18-3 record and went 14-0 in the NCAC to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season.  Football and field hockey each totaled 25 points towards DU's total.

Denison led all NCAC institutions in the Learfield Directors Cup standings.  They were also the NCAC's All-Sports Champion for a record 17th time.

In 2018-19, Denison Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics, Nan Carney-DeBord was named the Under Armour Division III Athletics Director of the Year for Division III.  She was recognized at the annual NACDA Convention in Orlando in June.

Additionally, 41 Denison student-athletes achieved All-American status and six received Google Cloud Academic All-America accolades, running Denison's total of Academic All-America selections to 95 which ranks Denison amongst Division III's national leaders in this prestigious category.
