Hugh Wilder was a four-time All-American in the 100 back, 200 back, 400 I.M. and 400 medley relay while swimming for the Big Red. Wilder, who co-captained the 1967-68 DU swim team, held six Denison records at the time of his graduation. Wilder won the Ohio Conference title in the 100-yard backstroke all four years he competed for the Big Red, and he also notched conference championships in the 200-yard backstroke in 1965 and 1968.
He earned his master’s and Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario in 1969 and 1973, respectively. Hugh taught Philosophy at Miami University in oxford, Ohio from 1972 until 1981. In 1985, Wilder was a member of the School of Criticism and Theory at Northwestern University. He served as Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at the College of Charleston from 1991 to 2000 and Speaker of the Faculty from 2001-2004.
Even after his departure from Denison, Hugh enjoyed competitive swimming. He swam with the Charleston team as a Masters swimmer where he competed internationally. Hugh held three world records and five national records in the backstroke events in the 55-59 age groups.
