MARIETTA, Ohio-- Denison gutted out a key regional victory on Saturday, 10-9 in extra-innings over No. 14 Marietta College at Don Schaly Stadium. The victory extends the Big Red's winning streak to eight games.
Denison led 9-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth but the Pioneers led off with a base hit through the left side of the infield. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt, the tying run was on third base with only one out. Denison intentionally walked Zack Ward to set up the double play and the plan nearly worked. Pinch-hitter Connor Golden hit a fielder's choice to second but Denison wasn't able to turn two and the run scored to tie the game at 9-9.
In the top of the 10th, first-year Max Lahn delivered a pinch-hit single to right to lead off the inning. Vince Walker reached on an error by the left fielder, moving Lahn into scoring position. A sacrifice bunt by Noah Hahn moved both runners up and Nick Pettigrew delivered the game-winning RBI with a groundout to third base that scored Lahn.
Early on it looked like this was going to be all Denison as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead thanks to a six-run third inning powered by a triple from Sam Frazen, an RBI double by Brian McAuliffe and a 2-run home run by Walker.
Denison starter Cody Mauri allowed only one hit in the first three innings but he ran into trouble in the fourth. Marietta mounted a two-out rally for the ages, scoring eight runs on eight hits.
Rivera entered the game in the fifth and was the calming force the Big Red desperately needed. He worked the next five innings, allowing only two hits and one run while striking out six. He earned the win to improve to 1-1. Perrett picked up his first career save with a scoreless 10th.
Marietta starter Scott Oberhelman didn't make it out of the third. He pitched 2.2 innings and allowed seven earned runs on seven hits. The loss was charged to MC reliever Dalton Wiggins who drops to 2-1 on the season.
This is Denison's third-straight win over Marietta dating back to the 2016 season. They are scheduled to host the Pioneers on April 24, in Granville, Ohio. The Big Red improves to 19-6 while Marietta drops to 18-6.
Denison's game that was scheduled for Sunday, April 15 at John Carroll has been postponed due to Sunday's weather forecast in Northeast Ohio.
