CHILLICOTHE, Ohio- Brian Roberts allowed one earned run and struck out eight in eight innings helping third-seeded Wabash to a 4-2 victory over second-seeded Denison on Thursday night at the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at VA Memorial Stadium.
Denison entered the game winners of 20 of their last 22 and the No. 24 ranking in the latest D3Baseball.com top-25 poll. They had plenty of reasons to be positive with staff ace Perley Provost on the mound with his sparkling 10-0 record.
Wabash struck first with one run in the second and another in the third. After the third, Provost settled into a groove and blanked the Little Giants in the fourth, fifth and six.
Denison got on the board in the fourth when Sam Frazen laced a single to right that scored Jack Blanchard from second. In the fifth, Grady Paine grounded out to second but Noah Hahn scored from third.
Wabash scored the go-ahead runs in the seventh on a Bryce Aldridge single to right field. Jared Wolfe scored on the play and a throwing error at third allowed Sean Roginski to come around and score the fourth run of the ballgame for the Little Giants.
Roberts was pulled in the ninth after hitting Vince Walker to lead off the frame. Wabash closer Zach Moffett slammed the door with three big outs to earn his seventh save of the season.
With the loss, Denison will play Kenyon College in an elimination game at 4 p.m. on Friday in Chillicothe. Wabash remains in the winner's bracket and will face Wooster at 12 p.m.
