Denison lands four on All-Mideast Region squads

(L-R) Tanner Johnson, Perley Provost, Mikey Rivera, Sam Frazen
(L-R) Tanner Johnson, Perley Provost, Mikey Rivera, Sam Frazen

GRANVILLE, Ohio--  Denison University baseball was well represented on both Mideast All-Region teams.  The Big Red landed four players (Tanner Johnson, Perley Provost, Mikey Rivera, and Sam Frazen) on the D3baseball.com all-region squad and three were named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region team.

Johnson and Provost were named first-team All-Mideast Region on both squads.  Johnson led the team in average (.378), hits (65), runs (57), RBIs (53), home runs (10), stolen bases (25), on-base percentage (.495) and slugging percentage (.692).  He leaves Denison with 201 career hits, 124 RBIs, 79 stolen bases, 161 runs scored and a .349 career batting average. He is the second player in program history to earn North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year accolades and the first since Derek Johnson in 2001.  This is Johnson's second-straight appearance on the ABCA/Rawlings squad. He was a third-team selection in 2017.

Provost, the 2018 NCAC Pitcher of the Year, tied the program record for wins (10) and finished with a record of 10-2 and a 2.68 ERA in 77.1 innings pitched.  In 62 appearances and 239.1 career innings pitched, Provost leaves Denison with a career record of 21-10 and a 3.42 ERA.  He ranks third in innings pitched, third in appearances, second in wins, tied for seventh in saves (4), fourth in ERA and tied for eighth in strikeouts (143).

Rivera was a second-team all-region selection on both teams anchoring the Big Red bullpen.  He led the team with 28 appearances and finished with a 3-1 record with a team-best eight saves.  He posted a 2.13 ERA in 63.1 innings pitched and struck out 67 batters.  His 9.52 K/9IP was a career-high.  Rivera shattered the program's single-season record for appearances and tied the Denison record for saves in a season.  His 2.13 ERA also broke the DU single-season mark by pitchers with a minimum of 50 innings pitched.

Frazen earned third-team All-Mideast region accolades from D3baseball.com after a career-year behind the dish.  He started 43 of 44 games and logged career-highs in average (.325), RBIs (38), home runs (4), doubles (16), runs scored (33) and hits (54).

Denison set a new program record for wins (32) and advanced to the NCAA Division III Regional for the first time in program history in 2018.  Head Coach Mike Deegan was named the NCAC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career.  Over the last three seasons, Denison has won 88 games and posted a .698 winning percentage.
