PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.-- Denison's winning streak reached nine games following a 7-1 victory over Vassar College at the Snowbird Classic.
Denison trailed 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning. First, Vince Walker tied the game with an RBI single that scored Max Lahn. Daniel Spencer broke the game open with a bases-loaded single through the right side that was misplayed by the right fielder. The error allowed Brian McAuliffe to score from first base, giving Denison a 5-1 lead entering the seventh.
In the seventh, McAuliffe blasted a two-run homer to right, scoring Lahn who reached on a bunt single to start the inning.
The win went to Denison reliever Mikey Rivera who entered the game in the top of the sixth in relief of starting pitcher, Taylor Perrett. Rivera pitched two innings and did not allow a hit while walking two. He improves to 2-0 on the season. Perrett pitched 5.0 innings, scattering four hits while allowing one unearned run. Vassar's lone run crossed the plate in the fifth inning on a fielding error by the Big Red. John Troll and Jack Arnstein combined to work a scoreless eighth and ninth to end the game.
Walker, Lahn and, Grady Paine had two hits apiece to lead Denison offensively. Spencer and McAuliffe led DU with two RBIs, each.
Denison (9-1) will play North Central (Ill.) on Tuesday, March 19 at 12 p.m. as the Snowbird Classic continues in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Denison Sports Network will provide a live audio broadcast of that game beginning at noon.
