Gebele, Carson & Weimar set to play in Aztec Bowl

George Carson, Canaan Gebele and David Weimar will play in the Aztec Bowl

GRANVILLE, Ohio--  A trio of Denison University seniors have been selected to represent Team USA in the 2018 Aztec Bowl in Mexico City, Mexico on December 8, 2018.

Representing Denison and Team USA will be quarterback and Gagliardi Trophy semifinalist Canaan Gebele, first-team All-NCAC right tackle George Carson, and second-team All-NCAC wide receiver, David Weimar.

Gebele was named the 2018 North Coast Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year after leading Denison to its first conference championship since 1986 and the program's first NCAA playoff appearance since 1985.  He passed for 2,153 yards and a career-high 25 touchdown passes while completing 61.7 percent of his passing attempts.  A dual-threat, Gebele also rushed for 612 yards and a team-best 14 rushing touchdowns.  His 252 points responsible for ranked second in Division III.

Gebele has re-written the Denison record book in terms of passing and total offense.  He is the career leader in passing yards (7,608), attempts (987), completions (634), touchdown passes (66), total offense (10,028), total plays (1,531) and touchdowns responsible for (106).  He also holds single-game records for rushing touchdowns (5), points scored (30) and touchdowns responsible for (8).

Protecting Gebele over the last for seasons was Carson on the Denison offensive line.  A four-year starter, Carson played in 38 games for the Big Red, earning honorable mention All-NCAC as a sophomore and first-team accolades in 2018.  He helped Denison lead the NCAC in rushing yards and helped junior tailback Alex Minton capture the NCAC rushing title in 2018 with 1,368 yards.  On Oct. 2 he was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week after helping Gebele and Minton post 100-yard rushing games against No. 11 Wittenberg.

Weimar has been Gebele's favorite target since 2016. He led the team in receptions (48), receiving yards (680) and touchdown catches (9).  He also threw two TD passes, with Gebele on the receiving end of both.  Weimar ranks fifth in career receiving yards at Denison with 2,168 yards.

The Aztec Bowl is a college Division I/II/III (since 1973) post-season bowl game that has been played intermittently since 1954. With but one exception, all games have been played at locations in Mexico; the exception was the 1957 game played in San Antonio, Texas.

The head coach of Team USA is Frank Haege of Augsburg College.  Carson, Gebele, and Weimar are the only representatives from the North Coast Athletic Conference.  Gebele is one of two quarterbacks on the roster. He is joined by Kelly Hall of LaGrange College.
