Cross and Weimar named to Academic All-America® team

GRANVILLE, Ohio—David Weimar and Ben Cross were named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A junior defensive lineman from Leesburg, Virginia, Cross was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® first-team after starting all 11 games at defensive end for the Big Red in 2018. He totaled 27 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 5.5 tackles-for-loss and one forced fumble.  Cross boasts a 3.90 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in philosophy, politics, and economics. In three seasons he tallied 62 tackles in 30 games played.  Cross was recognized at the 2018 James T. Glerum Top-50 Student-Athlete Celebration.

Weimar, a senior wide receiver from Pickerington, Ohio, leaves Denison as one of the most decorated receivers in program history.  He was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® second-team and is one of only four wide receivers in all of Division III football to take home the prestigious award.  He is a three-time Google Cloud Academic All-District® first-team selection and is a two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference honoree.  Weimar was selected to play for Team USA in the Aztec Bowl in Mexico City, Mexico and is a two-time James T. Glerum To-50 Student-Athlete honoree.

Weimar leaves Denison ranked fifth all-time in receiving yards (2,168) and receptions (157) and is tied for third with 22 touchdown receptions.  He is majoring in biochemistry and boasts a 3.82 grade point average.

Only 51 players were selected to this year's Google Cloud Academic All-America® teams and 34 of the 51 have at least a 3.90 GPA. The 25 members of the first-team have an average GPA of 3.93.

Denison University ranks among the leaders in NCAA Division III with 91 Google Cloud Academic All-America® selections. Created in 1952 by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is a premier, nationwide college scholar-athlete awards program. It recognizes over 800 outstanding student-athletes annually in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.

Cross and Weimar are the ninth and 10th Google Cloud Academic All-America® winners from Denison football program. They join Braden Layer (2012), Nat Kell (2011, 2012), Jon Dunham (1998, 1999), Tim Bolser (1989), Grant Jones (1987) and Dennis Thome (1975).  In 2015, Dr. Grant Jones '88 became Denison's first inductee to the Academic All-America Hall of Fame.
