Field Hockey shuts down Transylvania in season opener

DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Denison field hockey program started 2017 off on the right foot with a 2-0 win over Transylvania University on Saturday afternoon at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky.

In a match that saw the Big Red outshoot the Pioneers 19-9, Denison was able to break through in the second half when freshman Michelle Kabaira connected on a penalty shot for her first career goal and a 1-0 lead.

Transylvania only totaled four shots on goal for the game, but junior goalkeeper Allyson Benz put on a performance that helped keep the Big Red at bay. In a full 70 minutes of play, Benz totaled nine saves and didn't allow a goal until the 58th minute.

On the other side of the field, Denison's freshmen goalies Kerry Lawler and Teya Adams combined for a shutout performance, while the Big Red defense eliminated any shots on goal from Transylvania in the first half.

In the 67th minute, DU extended their advantage when a Charlotte Godfrey pass was finished by senior Tori Rapillo to take a 2-0 lead. To compliment her assist, the freshman Godfrey also led all players with five shots. Transylvania's fellow freshman, Audrey Denham, ended the game with four shots, which was second most for the game.

This is Denison's first season opening victory since 2013 when they defeated Ohio Wesleyan 2-1 in overtime.

The Big Red will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 3 when they return to Danville for a matchup with host Centre College. The match is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
