Denison field hockey is the unanimous favorite to win the NCAC

Denison field hockey team in pregame

GRANVILLE--  Denison was selected as the unanimous favorite in the North Coast Athletic Conference Preseason Field Hockey Coaches Poll on Tuesday.  Denison received a maximum eight first-place votes to total 64 points.  Last season, the Big Red tied for the regular season NCAC Championship after posting a 12-2 record in conference play.  They won the NCAC Tournament for the second time in program history and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 12th time.

The 2017 season also saw Denison post a 15-game winning streak in which they outscored the opposition 50-9.  Denison's NCAA Tournament run came to an end with a double-overtime loss to Washington and Lee.

Denison returns 82 percent of its goal scoring from a year ago, led by junior Charlotte Happel (13 goals) and sophomore Charlotte Godfrey (12 goals, 6 assists).  Sophomore Michelle Kabaira was named to the NFHCA All-American second-team, becoming the first freshman in Denison field hockey player in DU history to achieve All-American status.  Kabaira also was named the NCAC's Defensive Player of the Year and the conference Newcomer of the Year.

Denison head coach P.J. Soteriades returns for her 17th season leading the Big Red in 2018. She is the program's all-time leader in victories with 169.  The Big Red begins its season on Saturday, Sept. 1 when they host Centre College at 12 p.m.
