GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Denison improved to 8-2 overall and remained undefeated in the North Coast Athletic Conference after a 2-0 victory over Earlham College on Saturday.
It took the Big Red only 22 seconds to put a goal on the scoreboard as Lucy Pearsall knifed down the middle of the field and put a shot on goal that was saved by Earlham goalkeeper Margaret Murphy. Pearsall redirected the rebounded save to Maya Tumiwa who deposited the ball for the first goal of her career.
Denison had total command throughout the match. In the fifth minute of play, Earlham's Isabelle Bishop took a shot inside the circle that was blocked by a Denison defender. That was the only shot attempt of the day for the Quakers. It is also the only shot allowed by the Big Red defense in their last 140 minutes of play.
Denison entered the second half leading 1-0 and just like the first half, the Big Red offense answered early. Just 1:58 into the period, Denison was awarded a penalty corner that was sent into play by Virginia Hamilton. Charlotte Happel received the pass at the top of the circle and blasted a clean shot that found the back of the cage. It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for Happel.
For the match, Denison outshot Earlham 15-1 and posted an identical number in penalty corner attempts. Murphy posted eight saves for the Quakers and Alexis Warren added a defensive save in the first half.
Denison (8-2, 6-0 NCAC) will travel to Gambier on Wednesday (Oct. 3) for a 4:30 p.m. match against Kenyon.
