GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Big Red were paced by five different goal scorers on Saturday afternoon as Denison field hockey defeated DePauw University, 5-2, at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium in Granville.

In a first half that saw DU outshoot the Tigers 13-0, and blank the opposition in penalty corners (8-0), Denison scored on their fifth shot of the day when freshman AC Veith sent a pass along the goal line to senior Lucy Pearsall who sent a shot in the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the season to give Denison the early 1-0 lead.

Just over two minutes later, the Big Red took off on a fast break in DePauw territory when sophomore Charlotte Godfrey sent a pass forward for Maya Tumiwa. The freshman accepted the pass and moved to the left as she finished past DePauw's Hannah Metzger to extend DU's lead to 2-0.

With less than 10 minutes remaining until halftime, Denison cashed in again at the 25:43 mark when Tumiwa returned the favor to Godfrey as she scored from the left side of the cage for her third of the season.

At 29:03, sophomore Michelle Kabaira turned in the fourth different goal scorer for the Big Red in the first half when she capitalized on a looping backhanded goal from the left side to give DU a 4-0 advantage entering intermission.

Despite being outshot by the Tigers, 6-4, in the second half, Denison's Lauren Lazo tallied her second goal of the year at 56:47 when her breakaway from the left side ended in DU's fifth goal of the match to put the Big Red in front, 5-0.

Goals from Gretchen Bechthold and Sarah Goff chipped into Denison's lead toward the end of the match, but the Big Red was too much for the Tigers to handle as they improved to 10-2 overall and 8-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. DePauw dropped to 6-5, and 5-3 in conference play. The win also gives DU their 20th straight victory over NCAC competition dating back to Sept. 15, 2017, when they defeated Oberlin, 4-0.

Godfrey and Tumiwa led Denison with three points each on one goal and one assist per player. The tandem also combined for five shots on goal, while Lazo, Pearsall, and Kabaira also tallied two shots apiece.

In goal, sophomores Teya Adams and Kerry Lawler combined for one save in 70 minutes of action as Adams garnered her ninth win of the season. For DePauw, Metzger and Sarah Foye tallied nine saves in a full match effort.

Denison will look to stay undefeated in the NCAC next Friday, October 12 when they host the College of Wooster at 4:30 p.m.
