Kabaira & Pearsall garner All-America honors

(L-R) Michelle Kabaira, Lucy Pearsall
(L-R) Michelle Kabaira, Lucy Pearsall

GILBERT, Ariz. – Denison field hockey earned a pair of Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III All-America honors on Wednesday morning as sophomore Michelle Kabaira was named to the second-team and senior Lucy Pearsall picked up third-team accolades.

Named to the All-America second-team for the second-straight season, Kabaira continues her recognition on the national stage following a sophomore campaign where she was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons while also collecting the All-Great Lakes Region Player of the Year award.

She was named first-team All-NCAC and All-Great Lakes Region after anchoring a Denison defense that posted 11 shutouts in 2018 and helped log the seventh-lowest goals-against average in the country at 0.65. Holding the opposition to less than five shots in 12 contests this season, the Harare, Zimbabwe native also assisted on the offensive end with three goals and one assist during her second season in Granville.

Just like Kabaira, Pearsall picked up the second All-America honor of her career, which was last accomplished in 2016 as a second-team selection. A native of Cassopolis, Mich., Pearsall rounds out her career at Denison as a four-time All-NCAC selection, three-time All-Great Lakes Region honoree (2015, 16, 18), and two-time recipient of the NCAC's Midfielder of the Year award (2016, 18).

During her senior season, Pearsall finished second on the team with seven goals while adding two assists. Totaling 25 assists for her career, Pearsall is tied for second in program history for career assists with Keri Arnold (1997-00).

Kabaira and Pearsall have combined for four All-America honors over the last three seasons for the Big Red. Denison has totaled 16 different All-Americans since 1984.

The Big Red finished 2018 with an undefeated record (14-0) in NCAC play for the third time in school history. Also posting an 18-3 overall record, Denison advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second-consecutive season.
