ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Denison field hockey continued their hot start to the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon as they secured a 3-0 win over Elizabethtown College at Wolf Field in Elizabethtown, Pa. This is the second-straight year that the Big Red have started their season 2-0 and the seventh all-time under head coach P.J. Soteriades.

Led by a 6-4 shooting advantage for DU and a 75 percent success rate on shots on goal, the Big Red opened the match with a pair of saves from sophomore goalie Teya Adams who kept the Blue Jays off the board through the first three minutes of action.

With 2:16 remaining in the first quarter, Denison tallied the first goal of the day when a pass from sophomore Maya Tumiwa was deflected into the cage by junior Lyse Wagner who cashed in on her first-career goal to put the Big Red ahead 1-0.

In the second quarter, Denison and Elizabethtown exchanged penalty corners in the final two minutes before the half, but the Big Red capitalized at the 29:30 mark after freshman Meg Baylis fed a pass to Lauren Lazo who went one-on-one with the EC goalie and earned her first goal of the season. Denison carried a 2-0 advantage into the break.

While both sides went scoreless in the third quarter, the Big Red iced the victory in the fourth when senior Charlotte Happel accepted a penalty corner from Baylis at 45:41 and punched it in the back of the cage for her second goal of the year and the 36th of her career. The Blue Jays were held to one shot for the remainder of the match as Denison earned the win and moved to 2-0 on the season. Elizabethtown fell to 0-2 on the year.

Denison finished with six different players attempting at least one shot, including Lazo, Wagner, Happel, and Charlotte Godfrey who each took a shot on goal. Baylis finished with a game-high two assists.

In the cage, Adams earned her second win of the season after collecting three saves in 45 minutes of action. Junior Kerry Lawler also posted a save during her 15 minutes played. Elizabethtown's Madeline Kachel ended the day with one save in a full match effort.

The Big Red will return to action on Friday, September 6 when they travel to Washington, Pa. to take on the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College at 7 p.m.
