SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Junior Charlotte Godfrey notched her team-leading third goal of the season, lifting the Denison field hockey team to a 1-0 victory in their North Coast Athletic Conference opener against Witttenberg on Thursday.
The Big Red's suffocating defense held the Tigers shotless for the entire 60 minutes of play, helping junior goalie Teya Adams extend her current scoreless streak to 146:48. Tonight's win also marked the 15th-career shutout for the junior keeper and the second in as many games.
Through three quarters of action, the score remained deadlocked at 0-0 despite Denison's commanding 11-0 advantage in shots and 8-0 edge in penalty corner attempts. Approaching the final five minutes of regulation, Godfrey cashed in on DU's 17th shot of the contest. The unassisted marker was the 24th of her collegiate career.
Denison outshot Wittenberg 18-0 and outcornered the Tigers 12-0. Witt goalie Emma Hurguy made 10 saves in a losing effort. Godfrey and senior Charlotte Happel each registered five shots for DU, while Maya Tumiwa logged four attempts.
The Big Red (4-1) will enjoy an eight-game break from action before kicking off a three-game homestand on Saturday (Sept. 21) against NCAC foe Oberlin at 11 a.m.
