GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Ohio Wesleyan's Madisyn Bunke scored with three minutes left in the first half and that was enough to push the Battling Bishops to a 1-0 victory over Denison from Piper Stadium.
While both Denison and Ohio Wesleyan are members of the North Coast Athletic Conference, this was considered a non-conference game due to the new single round-robin schedule implemented for the 2019 season. With the new schedule, all conference teams will play four institutions twice, with the first contest being considered non-conference. Because of the schedule change, Denison's record 26-game conference unbeaten streak remains intact.
Denison held an 11-8 advantage in shots while doubling up the Bishops in penalty corners, 8-4.
In the late stages of the third quarter, Denison's Charlotte Godfrey was issued a green card, giving OWU a one-player advantage. It looked as if the Battling Bishops were about to start a fast break at midfield, but Denison's Rachel Kelsey made a nice play, stopping the potential transition attempt.
In the fourth quarter, the ball spent most of the time in the Big Red's attacking third. Godfrey had a nice look from the top of the circle with 10 minutes to play but her shot scooted left of the cage. The best chance of the quarter happened with four minutes left. Denison's Caroline Little took a shot that was saved by OWU goalie Genna Paulick. Another penalty corner was given to Denison and this time, Mya Tumiwa sent a shot on-goal that was erased by Paulick.
Paulick finished with four saves for Ohio Wesleyan. Denison's Teya Adams notched two saves on the day. Both goaltenders played all 60 minutes.
Denison drops to 6-2 while Ohio Wesleyan improves to 6-2. The rematch will take place on Oct. 17 in Delaware. DU's next match will take place on Saturday (Sept. 28) at 12 p.m. in Meadville, Pennsylvania when they face Allegheny for the first time.
