Denison men's golf rewrites record books at CMU

APOLLO, Pa.--  A handful of long-standing Denison men's golf records fell on Sunday at the Carnegie Mellon Fall Shootout.  Denison junior Christian Early fired a 3-under-par round of 67, breaking the 18-hole scoring record of 68 that was shared by six different individuals.  The team set a new 36-hole tournament record of 574.  The previous best two-round team showing was a 576 set on Oct. 5-6, 2008 at the Muskingum Fall Invitational at EagleSticks G.C.

As a team, Denison finished fifth in a stacked field of some of the region's best talent.  Washington & Jefferson won the tournament with a team total of 561.  Thomas More placed second at 564 and Allegheny was third at 566.  The host and 24th ranked Carnegie Mellon finished fourth (570) followed by the Big Red at 574.  Gettysburg (578), Grove City (588), Rosemont (593), Saint Vincent (593), Point Park (598), Westminster (608), Susquehanna (623), CMU-B (625) and Carlow (704) rounded out positions six through 14.

Denison's Sunday round of 283 broke an 18-hole team scoring record. The previous best was 285, also posted at the 2008 Muskingum Fall Invitational.  Early's two-day total of 138 bested Craig Eckerle's 139 set in 2002-03 to become a new varsity 36-hole scoring standard.  He finished the tournament tied for third place out of a field of 83 golfers.

Also logging top-20 finishes for Denison was Nick Brodbeck and Marc Mitchell.  Brodbeck closed with an even-par 70 on Sunday to shoot 143 which tied for 14th place.  Mitchell answered his 71 on Saturday with a 73 on Sunday to tie for 16thCal Buonocore fired a 73 on Sunday to post a 151 on the weekend.  Ben Scherman rounded things out with his second-straight 76.
