NORMAN, Okla. – Denison men's golf received a pair of honors by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) on Tuesday after junior Christian Early was named to the PING All-Great Lakes Region Team and freshman Marc Mitchell was announced as a member of the Division III All-Freshman Team.
As one of 98 players across six different regions to be named a PING All-Region selection, Early enjoyed a successful junior campaign where he posted a trio of second-place finishes for the Big Red during the 2018-19 season, including the first tournament victory of his career at the Ted Barclay Invitational (April 27-28) hosted at the Denison Golf Club.
Firing a new career-low round of 67 at the Carnegie Mellon Fall Shootout (Sept. 15-16, 2018), Early recorded an average score of 73.6 over 18 rounds of play this season. He also tallied four of DU's ten lowest scores in 2018-19.
For Mitchell, he was named as one of six players to the 2019 Division III All-Freshman Team after posting a breakout season for Denison as a rookie. As the Great Lakes Region's selection to the All-Freshman squad, Mitchell finished in the top-five on three different occasions for the Big Red, including in his collegiate debut where he finished fourth overall at the Battle at the Brook hosted in Sandusky, Ohio.
Finishing with two of Denison's three lowest scores this season, Mitchell set a new varsity record after firing a six-under-par 64 during the second round of the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship. That was the same round that the Big Red set a new team record by shooting a 271 at the par-70 course, breaking the previous record by 14 strokes. Through 18 rounds, Mitchell tallied an average scored of 74.1.
Mitchell's All-Freshman honor also makes him eligible to receive the Phil Mickelson Award which goes to the most outstanding freshman in Division III men's golf. The award winner will be announced on Friday, May 17 after the final round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships.
Denison men's golf finished the 2018-19 campaign with four tournament victories, including back-to-back wins at the Nye Intercollegiate and the Ted Barclay Invitational to end the regular season.
