TUNICA, Miss. – Highlighted by a second-place finish from senior Christian Early, Denison men's golf rounded out the 2019 Rhodes College Fall Classic with a third-place finish at Tunica National on Monday afternoon. Totaling a 54-hole score of 877 (+13), the Big Red edged out fourth-place Webster University by one stroke to finish in third. Southwestern University landed in second place with a team score of 873 (+9) while Huntingdon College captured the team title with a three-round score of 846 (-18).
Competing against a stacked field of 20 teams and 104 different players, the Big Red were led by Early who posted a three-under-par 69 in his final round of play to place second overall at -11 (205). He finished just three strokes behind Huntingdon's Drew Mathers who took home the individual title with a 202 (-14). Early carded five birdies in his final round. In the first and second rounds, he racked up birdies on 12 of his 36 holes.
Sophomore Marc Mitchell matched his second-round score with a 73 (+1) in round three as he finished in a tie for 13th with a 217 for the weekend. Mitchell logged birdies on No. 6, No. 14, and No. 15. On the par-5 15th hole, Mitchell played it -4 in three rounds thanks to an eagle in Sunday's opening round. Junior Will Grady fired the second-best score of the day for the Big Red with a two-under-par 70 that ended his tournament at 226 (+10) in a tie for 37th place. That was one stroke off his career-best round of 69 posted last year at the Camp Lejeune Invitational.
Ben Scherman rounded out the team scoring for DU with a 229 (79, 76, 74) through three rounds to finish tied for 52nd place. Connor Holleran also competed for Denison and posted a total score of 237 (82, 77, 78) to tie for 79th.
The Big Red will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they travel to Danville, Ky. to compete in the Centre College Fall Shootout.
