DANVILLE, Ky.-- Denison men's golf earned its first team title of 2019-20 by earning a five-stroke victory at the Centre College Fall Invitational from Danville Country Club. The Big Red finished the 36-hole tournament with a nine-over-par total of 585. Hanover College was second at 590. Third place belonged to Gettysburg at 600. They edged Franklin by one stroke. Centre finished in fifth at 616 followed in sixth by Berea College at 632.
Sam Davis led the way for Denison on Sunday with a one-over-par 73. That came on the heels of an opening-round 72 to place him in a tie for third place, overall. In Sunday's final round, Davis tallied four birdies and was one-under on the back nine to end up at 73.
Davis tied for third place with teammate Marc Mitchell who carded rounds of 69 and 76 to finish at 145. Mitchell birdied two of the four par-5's on the course on Sunday to end at +4 on the day.
Ben Scherman and Christian Early both fired 75s on Sunday to place seventh and eighth, respectively. Scherman posted a 36-hole total of 147 after a 72 on Saturday. In the final round, Scherman went out in 37 and in at 38 with one birdie on each side.
Early had an up and down start to his day, logging three birdies, two double bogeys, three bogeys and one par on his front nine. On the back he leveled out and added two more birdies, running his total to five on the day and eight for the tournament. He fired rounds of 73 and 75 to finish in a tie for eighth.
First-year Jack Lindgren rounded out Denison's lineup with a 76 to place in a tie for 21st at 155.
This is Denison's first tournament win of the season. Last year, the Big Red won four times in 10 tries.
