NASHPORT, Ohio – Denison men's golf fell one stroke shy of the team championship on Sunday as they placed second overall at the second annual Virtues Fall Shootout held at the Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.

Entering the final group of the day, Denison and Allegheny were tied for first place with matching scores of 519. Allegheny's Alex Lawson carded a 74 in the final round as the Gators finished with a team score of 593 to take home first place. The Big Red posted a 594 after they landed four golfers in the top-10 to place second overall. Kenyon followed in third place at 621.

Denison's efforts were highlighted by sophomore Ben Scherman who took home medalist honors after carding seven birdies during the final round of play, including four birdies on the back nine to finish with a new career-low round of 68 (-4) and a three-under-par 141 for the tournament. Sunday's 68 bested his previous career-low of 69 set during the second round of the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate this past April.

Junior Will Grady followed by three strokes in second place after he shot even-par (72) for the second-straight day and hit for par on 11 of his final 18 holes to finish with a 144. Senior Christian Early birdied four holes on the front nine as he ended the second round with a 75 (+3) and landed in a three-way tie for fourth place at 147. Freshman Jesse Felker tallied a pair of 74's for the weekend after he birdied four holes on the second day and finished the tournament in a tie for seventh with a 148.

After posting an 81 during the first round, sophomore Marc Mitchell improved by nine strokes on Sunday as he hit for par on 14 of his 18 holes and carded a 72 on day two and a 153 for the weekend to finish in a tie for 14th. Connor Holleran repeated his 77 from Saturday to land in the tie for 18th at 154.

Freshman Sam Davis rounded out the team scoring for DU with a 76 on Sunday to finish with a 159 (t-22nd) for the tournament while Jack Lindgren ended the weekend with a 162 (t-31st).

The Big Red will close out their fall schedule next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 28-29 when they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to compete in the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial Tournament hosted by Guilford College at the Sedgefield Country Club.
