The Denison Big Red will open the 2018 NCAA Division III Tournament against Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. from Piper Stadium.
This is Denison's 23rd appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Big Red brings a 15-3 record into this year's tournament and a No. 10 ranking in the most recent USILA Division III Top-20 poll.
Denison is led by sophomore attackman Peter Pittroff who ranks fourth in the nation in assists with 63. That ranks second in program history only to Liam Rooney's 88 assists in 2017. One hundred of the team's 262 goals this season have come from either Brooks Day (53) or Spencer Butler (47).
Henry DeCamp is 10th in Division III in faceoff winning percentage (.687). In his second season as the team's primary FOGO, DeCamp has 503 wins and 265 ground balls.
The Denison defense is anchored by senior All-American Ben Duhoski who leads the team with 22 caused turnovers and is third with 43 ground balls.
This is the third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for this senior class. They have gone 5-2 in their careers in the tournament with a Final Four appearance last season and a quarterfinal appearance in 2016.
This will be Denison's 40th NCAA Tournament game since 1982.
Illinois Wesleyan is 16-3 on the year and winners of the CCIW Tournament. This is the second-straight year that Denison and the Titans will meet in the NCAA Tournament. Last season, the Big Red prevailed 25-11 in the third round. IWU is led in scoring by Bailey Marth (56 goals, 29 assists) and James Malbuecher (51 goals, 32 assists). There are three common opponents on the Illinois Wesleyan schedule as the Titans defeated Wittenberg, 26-12 and DePauw, 24-9 but suffered an 18-11 setback to Ohio Wesleyan on March 1.
The winner of the Denison-Illinois Wesleyan matchup will face the winner of Ohio Wesleyan-Aurora in the third round.
