GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Denison head coach Mike Caravana joined an elite group of coaches as he captured career win number 300 in the Big Red's 12-5 victory over visiting Whittier College. Caravana is the 20th coach in the history of collegiate men's lacrosse to reach this milestone. In 26 seasons at Denison, he has compiled a record of 300-95 (.759).
Whittier and No. 13 Denison were meeting for the fourth time and playing for the first time since 2006 on Saturday. The Poets gave the Big Red all they could handle, taking a 3-2 lead into the second quarter.
In the second, the two teams played without a goal for the first 10 minutes of the quarter. The Big Red tied the game at 3-3 when Peter Pittroff found Owen Armstrong for the goal. The Poets were flagged for slashing on the goal and one minute later, Jake Waxter converted the man-up opportunity on another pass from Pittroff.
The junior attackman racked up seven points on the day (3 goals, 4 assists), moving him to 210 points in his career. He currently sits in sixth-place in career points at Denison. He needs only four points to move into fifth place and 11 points to jump to third place.
Denison won 16-of-21 face-off's led by Steven Villacorta's 14-of-19 performance. Richie Bartozzi led all players with seven ground balls and two caused turnovers. Chris Broderick tallied six ground balls and Sam Dyson finished with four.
Michael Bomes, Waxter, and Spencer Butler scored two goals apiece. At 162 career goals, Butler is just nine goals away from moving past Andy John into second place on DU's career mark for goals scored.
Denison held a 46-25 advantage in shots and was 2-of-4 in man-up situations. Reeves McKenney made six saves for the Big Red. His counterpart, Dakota Turgeon posted 14 saves for the Poets.
The Big Red improves to 10-2 on the year while Whittier drops to 13-3. Denison travels to Wooster on Wednesday (April 17) for a 7 p.m. start against the Fighting Scots.
