GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Denison will open the 2019 NCAA Division III Tournament against Concordia Wisconsin on Wednesday, May 8 at Piper Stadium.
Eleventh-ranked Denison is making its 24th appearance in the NCAA Tournament after Sunday's 17-11 victory over Ohio Wesleyan in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game. The Big Red brings a 16-2 record into this year's tournament. Denison has won 13-straight games dating to a March 15 loss to then eighth-ranked Dickinson.
Denison is led by a potent offense led by junior Peter Pittroff and seniors Spencer Butler, Brooks Davy, Jake Waxter and Owen Armstrong. Pittroff ranks second in the nation in assists per game (4.1) and recently became the program's career leader in the category. He Butler has scored 62 goals and is eight goals away from becoming Denison's all-time leader. Davy checks in with 57 goals and recently moved into fourth place on Denison's all-time scoring list with 148 goals.
Senior faceoff specialist Henry DeCamp has returned with a vengeance, winning 65 draws at a .730 clip over his last three games since returning from an injury. He became Denison's career leader in ground balls in Sunday's championship game versus Ohio Wesleyan.
This is Denison's 42nd NCAA Tournament game since 1982.
Concordia Wisconsin is making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament after a 9-7 win over Aurora in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference Championship game. They bring a 15-3 record into the postseason. Concordia Wisconsin's only losses this season have come against John Carroll (12-6), Brockport (8-6), and Carthage (16-7).
The Falcons are led in scoring by Keijo Day's 40 goals. Faceoff specialist Ben Gramarossa has a team-high 70 ground balls while winning 60 percent on draws. Senior goalie Garrett Wohlford boasts a .678 save percentage and an outstanding 5.99 goals against average.
The winner of Wednesday's second round matchup advances to play the winner of the Illinois Wesleyan-Rhodes second-round contest on Saturday, May 11.
