GRANVILLE, Ohio—Denison opened the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament with a 12-6 victory over Concordia Wisconsin at Piper Stadium on Wednesday night.  With the win, the Big Red advances to the third round where they will host Rhodes College on Saturday, May 11.

Appearing in its first-ever NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament, Concordia Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of man-up goals after a two-minute non-releasable penalty on the Big Red.

The Falcons had another ace up their sleeve in senior goalie Garrett Wohlford.  He entered the contest with the best save percentage (.678) and GAA (5.99) in the nation.  Wohlford tallied six saves in the first quarter but the Big Red rallied with four goals in a three-minute span late in the period.

The six-goal first quarter was the best quarter Denison had all night.  Goals from Camden Bowdy, Jake Waxter and Brooks Davy in the second gave DU a 9-5 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Denison continued to pepper Wohlford and the Falcon defense with shots, but the Big Red managed only three second half goals despite 23 shot attempts.  Wohlford ended the game with 19 saves.  Davy led the DU offense with four goals and one assist.  Owen Armstrong added two goals and Waxter finished with two goals, one assist, and three ground balls.  One game after becoming Denison's career leader in assists, Peter Pittroff tallied three helpers and one goal.

Wills Hutras led the defense with four ground balls and Richie Bartozzi posted three caused turnovers.

Denison goalie Reeves McKenney faced 14 shots-on-goal and finished with eight saves to improve to 17-2 on the season.  Henry DeCamp was 17-for-20 when facing off. He led all players with nine ground balls.

This was Denison's 42nd NCAA Tournament game in program history.

The start time for Saturday's third round matchup with Rhodes will be decided on Thursday, May 9.  Check for updates.
