Wilmington hands men's soccer a 3-1 setback

WILMINGTON, Ohio--  Denison closed out play at the 2018 Kiwanis Classic with a 3-1 loss to the host, Wilmington Quakers.  The Big Red drops to 1-3 on the season while Wilmington improves to 2-2.

Wilmington went on the offensive early, drawing a penalty kick after a yellow card was issued to the Big Red.  Niklas Martensson took the PK for Wilmington but Denison's Dylan Brown made the save in the third minute of play.

In the 35th minute, Martensson converted after assists by Leon Tank and Gabriel Nygard.  It was the fourth goal of the season for Martensson.

Two minutes and 30 seconds into the second half, the Quakers took a 2-0 lead after a goal by Tank on an assist from Martensson.

In the 60th minute, Denison cut the deficit in half when Lucas Lilley scored via a penalty kick.  In the final 10 minutes of play Denison attempted three shots and took two corner kicks but Wilmington's Daniel Kappelin ended DU's comeback bid with his third goal of the season with 1:19 left in the contest.

The Quakers held a 17-13 advantage in shots but Denison out-cornered Wilmington 6-3.

Brown finished with six saves for the Big Red.  At the conclusion of the match, he was named to the Kiwanis Classic All-Tournament team.  Wilmington goalkeeper Felix Maurer posted two saves while facing three shots-on-goal.

Denison returns to action on Wednesday (Sept. 12) when they host Capital University at 7 p.m.
