GRANVILLE, Ohio-- Thirty-eight shots were attempted and 12 were put on-frame but none found nylon as Denison and Allegheny played 110 minutes of soccer to a 0-0 tie on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
It was as action-packed as a 0-0 tie can be as both teams had solid chances to win throughout the two overtime periods.
The Big Red nearly broke through early in the second half when Ryan Albers' corner kick was headed toward the goal by Eric Buer. Allegheny goalkeeper Nick Ferreira was there for the save on Buer's strong header.
A similar opportunity arose for the Gators in the 60th minute when Owen Harkins' header went off the crossbar.
The Gators nearly walked away winners in the second overtime when the ball found its way into the Denison offensive third. Allegheny's Erik Orta got enough on the ball in a crowd and slipped it past Denison goalkeeper Dylan Brown. Luckily for Denison, Eric Buer was stationed with his back heels on the goal line and he managed to sweep away the would-be goal, preserving the tie.
Denison held a 24-14 advantage in shots and a 9-4 lead in corner kicks. Brown posted five saves for the Big Red and Ferreira tallied six stops for the Gators. Stu Windell led all DU players with seven shots. Jaben and Braden Adamson followed with four each.
The Big Red looks to get back on track on Wednesday (Sept. 26) when they host Thomas More at 7 p.m. from Barclay-Thomsen Field.
