GRANVILLE, Ohio – Brady Whittekind's goal in the 63rd minute helped Ohio Wesleyan secure a 1-0 victory over the Big Red on Saturday evening at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
On a humid evening that capped off Big Red Weekend in Granville, both sides combined for 21 fouls and 30 shots, with a 19-11 shot advantage going to the Bishops.
Despite Ohio Wesleyan outshooting DU 10-4 in the first half, it was Denison who looked to take the early lead at 3:06 in the match when Tucker Nuzum-Clark took a shot at the top of the box, but OWU's J.P. Baughman lunged forward to make a diving save that kept the match scoreless.
In the 20th minute of play, OWU posted a pair of back-to-back shots from Adam Yingling and Ryan Roberts, but Dylan Brown turned in saves on both shots as the match remained scoreless entering halftime.
Coming out of the break, Hector Gomez took the first shot of the second half, but DU's Ethan Miracle and Vitor Rocha each landed a pair of shots on target that forced multiple saves from Baughman in the 52nd minute.
At 62:42, Whittekind scored the match's lone goal on the right side of the net off a pass from Gomez that put Big Red behind, 1-0.
Trailing 1-0, Denison's Burke McLaughlin, Harrison Netburn, and Pierre de la Croix-Vaubois each attempted a shot on goal throughout the remainder of the half, but the Baughman kept a clean sheet for the Bishops as Ohio Wesleyan handed DU their fifth loss of the season.
Gomez added a match-best five shots to his assist while Yingling, Roberts, and Will Harr each followed with three shots. Nuzum-Clark highlighted DU's attack with two shots, including one on target.
In goal, Baughman earned the win with five saves in 90 minutes of action while DU's Brown tallied seven saves in a full match effort.
Denison will start their three-match road trip on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they travel to Meadville, Pa. for a 12 p.m. start with Allegheny College.
