In final preparation for the 2014 North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship, the Denison Big Red hosted its annual Last Chance Meet on Friday night at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville.
The Big Red posted six top-3 finishes highlighted by a Wallace Branche victory in the triple jump. Branche claimed the event title after surpassing his own school record by an inch with a combined jump of 46'9.00".
Sophomore Quenton Richards and senior Jon Brachna combined for four runner-up finishes on Friday night. Richards' first silver-medal performance came in the high jump after clearing 5'8". Later that night, he placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.04.
Brachna was runner-up in the 800-meter event with a time of 1:59.35. He also ran the opening leg of the second-place 4x400 relay. Brachna, Zach Cove, Ryan Keller and Mitch Keller combined for a time of 3:35.86. Both Kellers and Cove also occupied spots five through seven. Mitch placed fifth with a time of 2:00.66, while Cove (2:01.45) and Ryan (2:01.49) took sixth and seventh, respectively.
Andrew Groff posted the sixth top-3 finish after finishing third in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:13.33. Andy Shaw and John Bute took fourth and sixth, respectively, in the shot put. Shaw led the Big Red with a toss of 42'11.75", while Bute's heave of 41'00.25" was second-best on the team. The senior also finished ninth in the weight throw with a toss of 37'9.25".
Junior Riley Roselius took fourth in the pole vault after clearing 10'00", while a leap of 17'7.50" put Lester Harris fifth in the standings in the long jump. Ian Mulmat and Drake Lohnes each took home eighth-place finishes to round out the night for DU. Mulmat finished the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.72, while Lohnes clocked in at 4:40.02 in the mile.
The Big Red returns to action next weekend when they host the 2014 NCAC Indoor Track & Field Championship at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville. The two-day event will begin Friday at 12 p.m.
