Denison competes at Rhodes Open

Denison opened the 2013 outdoor season by sending a partial squad to the Rhodes College Open on Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.

Senior Chad Kosanovich paced the Big Red with a pair of top-15 finishes.  Kosanovich highlighted the event with a fourth-place finish in the mile after clocking in at 4:24.16. The senior middle distance runner also took 11th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.53.

First-years Wallace Branche and Quenton Richards and junior Jon Brachna also combined for six more finishes inside the top-15.  Branche took 10th place in both the 110 hurdles (16.50) and the triple jump (42-11.00) and finished 14th in the high jump (5-08.00).

Richards was 13th in the 100-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 11.35.  The senior also took 15th in the high jump after clearing 5-08.00.  Brachna also posted a 15th-place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:03.21.

Senior distances runners Jacob Ott and Steven Johnson each logged 18th-place finishes in the mile and 10,000, respectively.  Ott checked in at 4:38.29, while Johnson crossed in 36:45.36.  In the 5,000, freshman Brian Myers posted a time of 16:20.89 en route to an 18th-place finish.

DU also logged a pair of top-6 finishes in relay events.  The team of Brachna, Stephen Czujko, Johnson and Kosanovich finished third in the 4x800 with a time of 8:27.20.  In the 4x100, Brachna, Branche, Czujko and Ivan Hall took sixth after checking in at 45.98.

In the field events, junior John Bute finished 18th in the discus with a toss of 113-01.  He also took 20th in the shot put with a heave of 37-05.75.  Freshman Joel Sachnoff placed 18th in the javelin with a distance of 107-02.

Denison returns to action next Friday and Saturday (March 22-23) at the Washington & Lee-Virginia Military Institute Carnival in Lexington, Va.
